Fanning the Flame of Creativity

Poetry is like a diamond, language compressed to brilliance. Alan Wearne (poet)

As part of the KANGAROO UNBOUND exhibition, Year 11 Advanced English students participated in a creative writing workshop presented by Dr Luke Johnson, poet, curator and academic lecturer at the University of Wollongong.

Dr Johnson explained the concept of ekphrastic poetry, generally defined as poems written about works of art.  He challenged the students by explaining how to turn art into words, or rather how to create a verbal representation of a visual representation.

By exploring a range of examples and then encouraging students to work on their own ekphrastic poetry, Dr Johnson masterfully brought the students to an understanding of how ekphrastic poetry can not only explain or compliment an artwork but can become a work of art itself.

Our deepest thanks to Dr Luke Johnson for his engaging and fascinating creative writing workshop.
