Two SGCS Mathematics classes recently took part in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, a new initiative for Middle and Senior School students. Bebras is a fun and engaging competition to test students’ computation and problem-solving skills which are integral for success in mathematics.
The Bebras Challenge is an international computational thinking challenge involving over 2.9 million students from 60 countries. It began in 2014 and was delivered by CSIRO until 2023. From 2024, the Australian Maths Trust is delivering the Bebras Challenge in Australia.
We are thrilled to announce the extraordinary results of our students. Our Year 8 class achieved a remarkable four High Distinctions, two Distinctions, three Credits and 11 Merit Certificates. Our Year 10 Accelerated Mathematics class also achieved excellent results and were awarded a High Distinction and three Merit Certificates.
We congratulate all students who participated in the challenge and make a special mention of Year 8 students, Gabriel Campbell, Charlie Cox, Martin Lau and Thomas Pinguinha who were awarded High Distinctions, and Elektra Joseph and Josiah Lam who were awarded Distinctions, along with Year 10 student, William D’Olier who was awarded a High Distinction.
Mr Nathan Stavropoulos, Mathematics Subject Coordinator, said:
“With the implementation of the new Stage 6 Mathematics syllabus in 2019, the HSC mathematics exams have comprised less repetitive rote learning questions and instead included more problem-solving questions. It has never been more important to assist students with strengthening their problem-solving muscles if they are to reach their potential in school mathematics. Looking past school to the world beyond, it is even more important for our students to be competent problem solvers if they are to succeed in their careers.”
