The Lin-Manual Miranda’s groundbreaking musical masterpiece, Hamilton has returned to Sydney. Last week, a group of our Year 11-12 students took the opportunity to experience this this award-winning, musical sensation at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
For the Modern History students this was the culmination of a unit of work looking at popular representations of the past, specifically the strengths and limitations of musicals as a form of history. Students chose a song from the musical and analysed it for historical accuracy in relation to other more traditional historical sources to make a judgement about how truthful it was. It was a fitting end to the unit to be able to see the whole musical brought to life in person this way.
Our Drama and Music students relished the opportunity to view live musical theatre and to experience the genius of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s retelling of the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of the ‘founding fathers’ of the United States. The clever staging, the casting choices and the Hip Hop musical style made for an exciting and engaging experience for all students.
A wonderful night was had by all the students and staff who were able to attend. And special thanks to Mr He for his support on the evening.
Note: The Australian production of Hamilton played in Sydney in 2021, then Melbourne in 2022 and Brisbane in 2023. After travelling to other countries, it has returned to Australia but will only be playing in Sydney, until 5 January 2025.
