European History Study Tour

Travels with SGCS

European History Study Tour Exhibition and Video

A recent in-house exhibition, Travels with SGCS: European History Study Tour Exhibition in The Chapel Gallery, brought to life an extraordinary immersive learning experience. This exhibition focused on our European History Study Tour in April 2024, which saw 25 SGCS students in Years 11 and 12, accompanied by four staff, visit France, Germany and Italy.

The tour enabled students to build on their prior classroom learning and to personally see, encounter and experience history. By visiting key historical sites, it gave students a greater understanding of significant moments in European history and how both ancient and modern societies shaped their own world and influenced the world of today. Sites visited included the WWI battlefields, Nuremberg Trial Courtroom, Dachau Concentration Camp, the Ancient Roman Forum, Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Mr Scott Wimble, HSIE Coordinator, said:

‘For those studying Ancient History, the trip gave them an opportunity to not just see the source, but to breathe the source.

Nothing compares to physically being there. To stand in the shadow of the Colosseum and imagine the thousands of Romans streaming into the area, to sweep your eyes over the Circus Maximus and understand the vast real estate that chariot racing took up in the heart of the city is to better understand Rome itself.’

If you would like to experience a little of the European tour, Mr Wimble has created a video sharing some memories and highlights.
