In Week 2, Year 5 attended their annual camp to the Birrigai Outdoor School, located in the ACT adjacent to the Tidbinbilla Range and Namadgi National Park. The camp proved to be an immersive and educational experience that brought history to life, especially focusing on the Gold Rush era. The students engaged in a variety of outdoor activities such as crate climbing, building campfires, cooking damper, and participating in team-building initiatives. They also went bushwalking and learned some of the key skills in finding gold. These activities not only enhanced their physical and social skills, but also tied directly into their History curriculum.
The camp’s highlight was the Gold Rush simulation, where students experienced the hardships and tensions of life on the goldfields, culminating in a re-enactment of the Eureka Stockade, which was led by the iconic figure, Peter Lalor. Both teachers and students embraced their roles with enthusiasm, making the simulation an unforgettable learning experience.
